Happy New Year!! We hope you all had a relaxing and healthy break. Remember cold and flu season is in full swing. Make sure you and your children get plenty of sleep, plenty of water, and most of all remember to wash your hands. Hopefully you have also gotten a flu shot.
We have recieved an advisory from the Vermont Deparment of Health regarding confirmed cases of Pertussis (Whooping Cough) in Vermont. This illness is especially dangerous for young babies. Currently 5 doses of DtaP vaccine are recommended. Just because your child meets the school admittance requirements for immunizations does not mean they have had all 5 DtaP immunizations ( admittance requirments have change and some students were grandfathered, so please check with us or your child's primary care provider if you are unsure.) click here to get more information on whooping cough in
Vermont
If you are not already aware, Saxtons River Elementary School has nursing coverage four and one half days per week. Pam Murray RN is in on Mondays and Tuesdays and Jeannie Hodsden RN is in on Thursdays and Fridays. On Wenesdays one of the nurses will be in the middle of the day. One of our
primary goals is health promotion. To reach this goal we work with families and students regarding proper nutrition, getting adequate sleep and good hygiene practices such as hand washing. This helps to ensure that students are at school and ready to learn.
Many people think of the school nurse as the ones with the ice packs and band-aids, but our role goes far beyond. We work in conjunction with the Vermont Department of Health and the Vermont Department of Education on immunization compliance and we conduct annual screenings including vision and hearing. We provide medication management and administration when a child must have medication during the school day.
Health education is another role that we fill. We work in conjunction with Marylou Smith (physical education), Bill Scarlett (Guidance) and the classroom teachers to provide health teaching to your children.
The Fluoride mouth rinse program is open and free to all students in grades one and up. This is offered through the Vermont Department of Health and administered on Thursdays from 8am-8:20am by Jeannie Hodsden. If you did not sign your child up for this program, but would like to, just let us know.
