Happy New Year to you all!
We have started off the new year with our 6 week winter sports program.  You can find SRES students at either Okemo Mountain skiing or snowboarding, Grafton Ponds cross country skiing, Vermont Academy snowshoeing, or at the Vermont Academy Ice Rink skating.  It takes all SRES staff and up to 50 volunteers to make this happen, and we are very appreciative of everyone's effort.  Winter sports begin at 11 AM on every Tuesday up until our February break.
To monitor the progress made by our students in the areas of reading and math, we use an assessment tool called AIMSweb.  At the beginning, middle and end of the school year we give a benchmark assessment to students to track progress.  With the middle year data we are now collecting staff will meet in data teams to look at the information and use it to determine programming for the remainder of the year.  Is there a skill area that an individual or group of students not mastered and how can that be remedied in the classroom?  Can a different strategy be used with a student who is not making progress?  These are questions and more we will address as we strive to meet our mission statement and hold all students to the highest learning expectations.
The Rockingham School Board has adopted a school budget for the 2010-11 school year.  This proposed budget will be available for public comment/feedback the evening of March 1st, with Town Meeting Day for the final voting to occur on March 2nd.  The proposed locally funded portion of the budget is down approximately 1% from last year's budget, including all salary and health benefit increases.  We worked hard as an administrative team to respond to the challenging economic times, and cut wherever possible, yet still provide the best education for our students.

Upcoming Events:

Roller skating:  Feb. 5th, 3-4:30, SRES gym
PTO meeting:  Feb. 10th, 7 PM, SRES library
February vacation:  Feb. 15th-19th, school resumes on Feb. 22nd

Best,

David Lesser, principal
